Start with Why...

My first post on this blog was about my journey to becoming a yoga teacher. I thought it was important to start with how I became a Yoga Teacher. I listened to a very inspiring Ted Talk (which I've link to at the end of this blog post) about establishing your why. I highly suggest you listen to it but a very brief synopsis is, you need to have a strong sense of why you're doing what you're doing, and communicate to people why they should be interested.

So this got me thinking about my why… why am I passionate about yoga and teaching this practice? This seems like it would be an obvious thing to answer. I can feel in my gut and in my heart why I need to share what I’ve learned but putting it into words is difficult.

I believe that if each individual invests in themselves, and creates change and growth on a personal level, we can have a profound effect on the world as a whole. I have seen this happen within communities and I can only imagine how that would continue to catch fire on a larger scale.

If each person out there invested in a personal yoga practice they would feel not only physically healthier but also more grounded, be kinder, and intentional with their words and actions (only to name a few!). After investing in their own physical, mental, and emotional health their capacity to share and give to those around them increases dramatically because you can’t give to others from an empty vessel. So not only are they capable of giving and serving their community but those members of community who have witnessed this profound change will feel inspired to pursue a personal yoga practice.

So in simple terms, my why, is that I know that Yoga has the ability to improve the lives of the people who practice it, and it can’t help but then change their community. If this change continues to gain momentum then I believe that by teaching a yoga class, the way one drop of water in a still pond causes waves, great and profound change is inevitable.
